Restoration of Michelangelo's David. Ultraviolet light revealing stains on Michelangelo's David, a marble statue sculpted by the Italian Renaissance artist Michelangelo. This statue is one of the world's most celebrated works of art. It depicts the Biblical David (later King of Israel) at the moment of his battle with Goliath. This is David's left hand, holding one end of the sling used to slay Goliath. The statue, which is over 5 metres in height, was sculpted from 1501 to 1504. Since 1873, it has been displayed in the Accademia Gallery, Florence, Italy. The gallery carried out this restoration in 2003 and 2004, in preparation for the statue's 500th anniversary.
