Caption

Digitised fingerprint records: close-up view of a computer display of a digitised fingerprint, part of a system used by French police forces for storing & analysing criminal records. The system permits detailed comparison & possible matching of records taken from a scene of the crime with existing records on file. Old paper copies of criminal records can be transferred onto computer using a digitising scanner. The purple "flags" marking the pattern of skin contours are arranged by the computer software when testing for a positive match between fingerprints.
