Murder victim with a stab wound (lower right) to his chest. The photograph will be used as evidence. The shape of the stab wound can identify the weapon that was used, here a knife. Further examination may reveal the angle of attack, and the force used to stab the victim. Other evidence illustrated here includes the mottled and bruised skin. This is an indication that a struggle may have taken place, and marks on the neck indicate strangulation by the use of a cord. The colour of the skin and the bruising can also reveal the force of a blow and sometimes whether it occurred before or after death. The appearance of the skin can also help determine the time of death.
