Murder victim with a forensic investigator's hand lifting the electrical cord used to strangle the victim. This reveals areas of severe bruising (the black congealed blood) and traces of blood (red) from skin abrasions. The bruises seen below the victim's chin could be thumb marks from a manual strangulation. The photograph will be used as evidence. The colour of the bruised skin can help indicate the force of the bruising and whether the bruising took place before or after death. The appearance of the skin can also help determine the time of death.
