Strangulation analysis. Throat of a murder victim being studied under a light microscope. The throat and surrounding tissues have been removed from the dead body during a post-mortem examination. The aim is to look at the hyoid bone (a bone in the throat) to see if it has been fractured during the strangulation. The larynx (voice box) is the tube structure seen at centre right. The hyoid bone is the U-shaped object seen at the top of the larynx. The hyoid is found at the top of the throat, just below the tongue.
