Forensic evidence. Police officer removing a swab sample from its sterile container, for analysis. If a person is arrested by the police, they must supply a saliva sample. From this a DNA (deoxyribonucleic acid) profile can be formed and compared to profiles already held on the National DNA Database (NDNAD). The NDNAD was set up by the Forensic Science Service in 1995.
