Footprint lifting. Scene of crime officer (SOCO) lifting a footprint left on a path at a crime scene. He is using electrostatic lifting apparatus (ESLA). This technique is used to recover footwear marks in dry conditions. A sheet of metallised film is placed over the print using a roller. A high static charge is then applied to the film, which causes the dust particles in the print to become attracted to the film. Because the film is black on one side, the print can be seen when lit. It is then photographed and the image used to match the print against a suspect's shoe.
