Potassium bromide disc held in a hand. This disc is utilized in infrared (IR) spectroscopy as it is transparent to IR radiation. IR spectroscopy is a method of analysing chemical bonds within molecules. The samples to be tested are placed on the disc and IR radiation is shone through the sample, which produces an absorption spectrum that shows the molecules' structures.
