Caption

Swiss saffron crocuses (Crocus sativus). This flower is the source of the valuable spice saffron. The village of Mund, in the Valais, Switzerland, is the only location north of the Alps in which it grows. Saffron has been cultivated in Mund since the 14th century. It is thought that it was brought to Switzerland by pilgrims from Spain or Italy. Photographed in Valais, Switzerland.
