Frontispiece from Sprat's History of the Royal Society of 1667. At left is William, Viscount Brouncker (1620-85), British mathematician, who was a founder and first president of the Royal Society. At centre is a bust of King Charles II of England, patron of the Society, shown being crowned by fame. At right is Francis Bacon (1561- 1626), British philosopher, who inspired the ideals of the Society.
