Adolf Hitler with engineers. Portrait of Adolf Hitler, German leader (far right), meeting German engineers (from left to right) Ernst Heinkel, Wilhelm Messerschmitt and Ferdinand Porsche. Hitler (1889-1945) became leader of Germany in 1933 and is mainly remembered for beginning World War II (1939-45). Germany lost the War but had many initial successes due to the quality of her troops' equipment. Heinkel (1888-1958) designed warplanes; one of his designs, the Heinkel He 178, was the first jet aircraft ever to fly on 27 August 1939. Messerschmitt (1898-1978) designed successful fighter aircraft. Porsche (1875-1951) designed the Tiger tank. Photographed in 1938.
