American presidents. View of Mount Rushmore lit up at night. This mountainside in South Dakota, USA, has the busts of four notable presidents of the USA carved into it. At left is George Washington (1732-1799), the first president and the unifier of the states. To his right is Thomas Jefferson (1743-1826), the third president, and the author of the Declaration of Independence. Next is Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919), 26th president, and a campaigner for workers' rights. At right is Abraham Lincoln (1809-1865), the 16th president, who led the Northern Union through the American Civil War, and was assassinated at the end of it. The carving took place between 1927 and 1941.
