Einstein and Oppenheimer (right). Portrait of the German-Swiss- US theoretical physicist Albert Einstein (1879- 1955) with the US theoretical physicist (Julius) Robert Oppenheimer (1904-1967). Einstein is famous for his theories of Special and General Relativity that rewrote our concepts of gravity, space and time. His mass-energy equation foreshadowed atomic power. He emigrated to the USA in 1933, where he helped initiate the Manhattan Project (to build an atom bomb), of which Oppenheimer was the Director.
