Samuel Johnson and James Boswell taking tea in Edinburgh, Scotland, 1786. Samuel Johnson (1709- 1784) was an English lexicographer and the writer of the first English language dictionary. James Boswell (1740-1795), Scottish author and biographer, was a friend of Johnson, writing Johnson's biography in 1791. Illustration by Thomas Rowlandson (1756-1827), English caricaturist.
