Gherman Titov and Mstislav Keldysh at the conference for general disarmament and peace, Moscow, Russia, USSR, May 1962. Titov (left, 1935- 2000) was the second Soviet in space, orbiting the Earth 17 times on 6-7th August 1961. Keldysh (1911-1978) was the President of the USSR Academy of Sciences and held an important role in the Soviet space programme.
