Soviet Academy mathematicians and physicists (from left) Bogolyubov, Muskhelishvili, Lavrentyev and Keldysh (far right) talking during a break at the first session of the USSR Supreme Council (seventh convocation), in Moscow, Russia, on 2 August 1966. Nikolai N. Bogolyubov (1909-1992), had been made director of the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) the previous year. Nikoloz Muskhelishvili (1891-1976) was a professor at the Tbilisi State University, Georgia, from 1922-1976. Mikhail Lavrentyev (1900-1980) was Chairman of the Siberian Branch of the Soviet Academy of Sciences from 1957-1975. Mstislav V. Keldysh (1911-1978), a former student of Lavrentyev, was Chairman of the Soviet Academy of Sciences for 14 years from 1961.
