Euclid and Ptolemy Soter. The Ancient Greek mathematician Euclid (lower centre, red cloak) was active during the reign of Ptolemy I Soter, the Macedonian general who ruled Egypt from 323-283 BC. Euclid is presenting Ptolemy (on throne) with a copy of his most famous work, his Elements of Geometry. Artwork from the 19th century book Vies des Savants Illustres.
