Portrait of Dr John Arrand, British biochemist and discoverer of a vaccine against Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV). The vaccine contains a protein found on the outer coat of the EBV virus. When administered, the vaccine triggers an immune response within the body. Epstein-Barr infection is a causative agent in nasopharyngeal cancer and Burkitt's lymphoma: both have a high incidence in less-developed countries. The vaccine may also be effective against glandular fever and Hodgkin's disease. Arrand works at the Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, Manchester. Photographed in 1993.
