Caption

Professor Malcolm Atkinson, director of the National e-Science Centre (NeSC), based at Edinburgh University, UK. The NeSC will operate Europe's most powerful supercomputer, which will start operation in September 2003. This will be connected to The Grid, a network of supercomputers that is accessible from a standard desktop computer. Unlike the internet, in which only information is shared, The Grid will allow the sharing of processing power. This means that people all over the world will be able to harness the power of a supercomputer. This will find uses in engineering, astrophysics, medicine and pharmaceutics.
