Vladimir Arnold (born 1937), Soviet mathematician. Arnold studied at Moscow State University, graduating in 1959. He became a professor at the university in 1965, and worked there until 1986 when he moved to the Steklov Mathematical Institute, also in Moscow. His work includes the Kolmogorov-Arnold-Moser theorem in classical mechanics, catastrophe theory, topology, algebraic geometry, and singularity theory. One of his first results was solving Hilbert's thirteenth problem. Arnold's honours include the Lenin Prize (1965) and the Crafoord Prize (1982). In 1990, he was elected to the USSR Academy of Sciences. Photographed in Russia in 1982.
