Aesop (c.550 BC), Ancient Greek fabulist. Aesop was a slave in Samos, but was eventually freed by his master. Among the many fables attributed to Aesop are "The Tortoise and the Hare" and "The Fox and the Grapes" . Engraving from "Vies des Savants Illustres" (1877), based on a marble bust at the Villa Albani, Rome, Italy.
