George Ogden Abell (1927-1983), US astronomer. Abell's best-known work is the Abell catalogue of galaxy clusters, which he published in 1958 and which has been updated several times since. Abell worked at UCLA (the University of California, Los Angeles). He was also a sceptic, science populariser, and science administrator. He presented educational television programmes, worked on the Summer Science Program, and was a fellow on the Committee on Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP). From 1969 to 1971, he served as President of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific. The asteroid 3449 Abell was named in his honour.
