The biochemist Dr. Sydney Brenner, born in South Africa on March 13th 1927, in his office at the Medical Research Council's Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge, UK. Having won a university scholarship by the time he was 15, Brenner rapidly gained qualifications in both medicine & biology and began research in molecular biology at Cambridge. Since 1963 he has been making an in- depth study of the nematode worm Caenorhabditis elegans. A world-wide project to decode the genome, the genetic blueprint, of this simple multicellular animal (essentially as a dry run to a similar project involving the human genome) has come about largely due to his efforts.
