Portrait in ink of Matthew Boulton (1728-1809), British technologist. Boulton is best known for his financial and intellectual support for the steam engine pioneer, James Watt. Boulton stepped in with financial aid when Watt's first partner went bankrupt. Boulton was a gifted entrepreneur, their fortunes flourished as Watt invented new and more powerful steam engines. Boulton also supplied many ideas for Watt's fertile mind, including the gearing needed to produce rotary motion from their engines.
