Dominique Bockelee-Morvan. Portrait of Dominique Bockelee-Morvan, astrophysicist, with a radio telescope in the background. Bockelee-Morvan works at the Observatoire de Paris in France. She researches the structure and composition of comets, which she studies using radio telescopes. The bright comets Hyakutake (in 1996) and Hale- Bopp (in 1997) were extensively studied, and found to contain, amongst other things, sulphur and methanoic (formic) acid. Such molecules are common on Earth, and it has been suggested that material from comets could have provided the ingredients for life on Earth. Photographed in 1997.
