Hubert Cecil Booth. Portrait of the English engineer Hubert Cecil Booth (1871-1955). Booth devised a household vacuum cleaner in 1901. It consisted of a suction pump powered by a 5 horse- power petrol engine. The device was transported in a horse-drawn van to the client's house where hoses, connected to the pump, were passed through the house's windows to clean the carpets. By 1906, Booth had devised the Trolley-Vac. This was an electrically-powered mobile vacuum cleaner for use in the home.
