E Margaret Burbidge (born 1919), British astronomer. Together with Fowler, Hoyle and her husband Geoffrey, she showed how heavier elements are produced from lighter ones in stars. By studying the spectra of galaxies she determined the mass, rotational speed and chemical composition of them. She also performed much research on the spectra of quasars. She was director of the Royal Greenwich Observatory from 1972-1973.
