Francis Broussais (1772-1821), French doctor. Broussais believed that most disease were due to inflammation in the gastrointestinal tract. He prescribed a lean diet and blood-letting with leeches as a cure. His view was so popular that during 1833, over 4 million medicinal leeches were imported into France.
