Dr Francine Benes, American neuroscientist. Dr Benes is director of the Structural and Molecular Neuroscience Laboratory, McLean Hospital, Massachusetts, USA. She is also director of the Harvard Brain and Tissue Resource Center, the world's largest brain bank. It has over 3,000 healthy and diseased brains donated for medical research (seen here stored on shelves to left and right of Dr Benes). These are made available to researchers studying diseases such as Parkinson's, Alzheimer's and schizophrenia. Photographed in 2006.
