Max Born (1882-1970), German physicist and Nobel laureate, in uniform. Born gained his doctorate at Gottingen, Germany, and later became professor of physics. He was Jewish and left Germany in 1933 to avoid persecution by the Nazis. He worked in the UK in Cambridge and then Edinburgh, and retired to Gottingen in 1953. Born shared the 1954 Nobel Prize for Physics with Walther Bothe. The share of the Nobel was awarded for Born's work on quantum mechanics and interpreting the quantum wavefunction statistically.
