Etienne de Condillac. Engraving of Etienne Bonnot de Condillac (1715-80), French philosopher and early psychologist. Condillac's main contribution was his theory of sensationalism. He argued that all human knowledge and conscious experience was gained from sensory perception and that none of it was known at birth. Condillac's major work was Traite des Sensations (Treatise on Sensations, 1754). He was an important supporter of the empiricism ideas of the British philosopher John Locke. These stated that knowledge should be gained by experience rather than by intuitive speculation.
