Simon Clemett. Portrait of Simon Clemett, meteorite researcher, with the Martian meteorite ALH84001 in the background. Clemett works at Stanford University, USA. He was part of the team which announced the first evidence of life on Mars. The meteorite ALH84001 was found in Antarctica, and examination revealed shapes which resembled fossilised microorganisms in the rock. Extensive testing showed the meteorite was Martian in origin, and was blasted off the surface of Mars around 3.5 billion years ago. At this time, Mars was a warmer place, with conditions potentially suitable for life. Photographed in 1997.
