Ranieri Cancedda. Portrait of Italian biologist Ranieri Cancedda, holding a plate of cultured cells. Cancedda's research team have developed a bioceramic material capable of stimulating bone reconstruction in animals and humans. The material consists of a segment of ceramic hydroxyapatite infiltrated with bone precursor cells. When it is implanted into the defective bone site, the production of bone cells from the bioceramic leads to the formation of fully functional bone tissue. The culture dish held by Cancedda contains colonies of bone cells grown from a single precursor cell. Cancedda is a professor of biology at Genoa University, Italy.
