Caption

Robert Cailliau (b.1947), Belgian computer scientist and engineer at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory) near Geneva, Switzerland. Cailliau graduated in 1969 from the University of Ghent with a degree in electrical and mechanical engineering. After working in a mechanical engineering laboratory he undertook an MSc in computer, information and control engineering at the University of Michigan, USA, in 1971. In 1974 Cailliau moved to CERN, becoming group leader of office computing systems in 1987. In 1990 he collaborated with Tim Berners-Lee on a hypertext system for access to CERN documents, which led to the invention of the world wide web. Cailliau retired in 2005.
