Alan Hugh Cook (1922-2004), British physicist. Cook graduated from the University of Cambridge, UK, during the Second World War and was drafted to research radar. After the war he continued his academic career at Cambridge, then in 1952 began working at the National Physical Laboratory, where he remained for 17 years. He studied the gravitational field of the Earth and optics, with some astronomical work on the movement of planets and interstellar microwave emissions on the side. In 1969 he returned to Cambridge, where he spent the rest of his life. He served as president of the Royal Astronomical Society from 1977-79 and was knighted in 1988.
