James Cronin (b.1931), American physicist. Cronin worked on the decay of neutral kaons with respect to the conservation of charge conjugation (C) and parity (P). One type of kaon decays into two pions, but Cronin's work also showed this to be true for another kind, violating CP conservation. This proved that the decay was not symmetrical with respect to time. Cronin and his colleague Val Fitch shared the 1980 Nobel Prize for this work.
