Alexander V. Chayanov (1888-1937), Soviet economist. Chayanov specialised in rural and agrarian economics. He supported the Soviet co-operatives on a small-scale, but criticised the introduction of large-scale farms worked by peasants. Chayanov's views were criticised by Stalin, and in 1930 Chayanov was arrested. A show trial failed, but a secret trial in 1932 led to a 5-year sentence to a labour camp. On 3rd October 1937, Chayanov was once again arrested. He was tried, convicted, and executed by bullet the same day. Photographed in Russia, in 1921.
