Composite photograph featuring Charles Robert Darwin (1809-1882) English Naturalist and author of the Origin of Species published in 1859. Darwin's view that natural selection played a fundamental role in the origin of species derived much of its substance from observations of birds and flowers, especially those made during his voyage on the Beagle. His notebooks, kept during this voyage, are visible at bottom right. The magnolia (bottom left) is believed to resemble most closely the earliest flowering plants.
