Edmund Beckett Denison. Portrait of the British lawyer and inventor Sir Edmund Beckett Denison (1816-1905). Denison became Lord Grimthorpe in 1886. He studied mathematics at Cambridge, England, before becoming a lawyer. Denison wrote on clock design and invented a new escapement for the Big Ben clock in London, England. His escapement, the part which connects and regulates the clock's motive power, was widely used.
