Baron Guillaume Dupuytren (1777-1835), French surgeon and anatomist. At the age of 18, Dupuytren was employed by the newly established School of Medicine in Paris to teach anatomy and conduct autopsies. He used this opportunity to further his study of pathological anatomy. In 1803, he was appointed assistant surgeon at the Hotel-Dieu. In 1811, he became professor of surgery and, in 1858, professor of clinical surgery at the School of Medicine and head surgeon at the Hotel-Dieu. He had an extensive private practice and amassed a considerable fortune in his lifetime. Dupuytren's syndrome, a contracture of the hand is named after him.
