Hans Georg Dehmelt (1922-2017), German-American physicist. Dehmelt shared the 1989 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the ion trap technique. Dehmelt developed the Penning trap, an electromagnetic device that is able to hold electrons and ions in relative isolation for long periods of time, allowing them to be observed and measured.
