Date palms. Date palm trees (Phoenix dactylifera) with dates ready for harvest. This tree is native to northern Africa, south-west Asia and India. It is also cultivated in hot, dry regions throughout the world. These trees can grow up to 18 metres tall and bear leaves up to three metres long. Below the leaves are spikes (brown) containing up to 1000 dates. When dried, these dates can be used to make syrups, vinegar and strong liquors. Photographed in California, USA.
