Albert Einstein (1879-1955), physicist, receiving US citizenship from Judge Philip Forman. Einstein was born in Germany but renounced his citizenship in 1896, becoming a Swiss citizen in 1899 and, in 1940, after emigrating there in 1933, a US citizen. His mass- energy equation resulted from his 1905 paper on Special Relativity. This paper, with his 1915 General Theory of Relativity, replaced the Newtonian world view, rewriting our concepts of gravity, space and time. Early work on the photoelectric effect won him the 1921 Nobel Prize for Physics. Much of his later life was spent in opposition to the theory of quantum mechanics.
