Portrait of John Flamsteed, English astronomer, born on August 19th 1646 in Derby, Derbyshire & died on 31st December 1719 in Greenwich, near London. Flamsteed, among others, petitioned King Charles 11, to build a national observatory in order to improve navigational procedures. The observatory was built at Greenwich & Flamsteed was appointed to head it as the first Astronomer Royal in 1675. Flamsteed published the first star catalogue of the telescopic age, which was three times as large as any previous one & the individual stars were located with six times the precision.
