Title page of John Flamsteed's star catalogue, published 1725. Flamsteed (1646-1719) was born in Derbyshire, England. He established the Royal Greenwich Observatory and became the first astronomer royal in 1675. Flamsteed's catalogue listed three times more stars than Tycho Brahe's earlier catalogue, and located them with six times the precision. It was the first great star catalogue of the telescopic age.
