Moso bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens). Bamboo is a member of the grass family Gramineae. Its large stalks, known as canes or culms, grow rapidly to reach heights of over 20 metres with a diameter of between 6 and 18 centimetres. Moso bamboo is native to China where it is harvested for building timber and for its shoots, which are eaten.
