Date palms. Three date palm trees (Phoenix sp.) in a desert in North Africa. Date palms are evergreen trees that are native to North Africa and Asia. They can grow up to 30 metres tall, with leaves of up to 5 metres long. The fruit, dates, are borne in brown spikes (centre tree) that hang below the leaves. Each spike can contain up to 1000 dates.
