Steve Grand and Lucy. Portrait of Steve Grand, the British artificial intelligence (AI) researcher, holding Lucy, his robot. Since May 2000, Lucy has been designed, financed and built at Grand's home. As a test model for his theories on AI, her senses (hearing, vision, touch) input to her brain. This consists of internal circuit boards for sensory control and an external link to another computer that contains Grand's neural software. Grand wrote Creatures, a successful computer program that created virtual, autonomous life forms. He later founded Cyberlife Research Limited, and now works from his home in Somerset, England. Photographed in early 2001.
