Portrait of Baron Alexander von Humboldt a German naturalist born on September 14th 1769 and died in Berlin on May 6th 1859. The engraving was made by J. Horsburgh. Humboldt was an exceptional man of his time, remembered for his contributions to botany, geography and geology. In 1799 he went on a voyage of exploration and scientific investigation, which took him down the length of the Orinoco River. He was able to verify its connection with the Amazon drainage system. He returned with large quantities of botancial and geological specimens. Later in life Humboldt organised the knowledge he had acquired into a five volume book called Kosmos.
