One of the service tunnels leading to the Gran Sasso Laboratory, Italy, the largest underground laboratory in the world. It is aimed at studying the properties of sub-nuclear particles in astrophysical situations. The main experiments involve the detection of neutrinos, emitted by the Sun and supernovae explosions, highly energetic particles in the cosmic rays and magnetic monopoles (never seen so far). The laboratory lies under 1400m of rock which provides a shield equivalent to 3500m of water. This does not affect the flux of neutrinos but stops the low-energy particles in the cosmic rays.
